From the Heart to the Mind | Our TRC Journey Continues 

Last year at Haultain Memorial School, our Truth and Reconciliation work focused on the Heart | To Belong. 

We explored what it means to build relationships grounded in respect, reciprocity, and belonging. You would have seen this visible in our learning around the Seven Sacred Teachings, and our work with Elder Jackie. We learned that reconciliation begins with relationships, with one another, with Indigenous students, families, Elders and community members, and with the land. 

This year, our journey continues. 

In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, Haultain Memorial School acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and is making a new commitment for the 2026–2027 school year: 

Mind | To Know 

We will use continuums of support to provide Indigenous students with the right literacy and math support at the right time, while creating learning experiences that benefit every student. Through Indigenous knowledge, cultures, histories, and perspectives, we will build identity, belonging, respect, and connection for all. 

This commitment begins with the understanding that knowing matters. 

Knowing who we are. 

Knowing where we come from. 

Knowing the stories of the people and places around us. 

Knowing that Indigenous knowledge, cultures, histories, and perspectives are an important part of our shared learning. 

It also means knowing our students well, understanding their strengths, needs, identities, and experiences so that we can provide the right support at the right time. Our work in literacy and mathematics will be informed by what we learn about our students, with a particular commitment to ensuring that Indigenous students are supported to thrive. 

But this learning is not only for some students. It is for all of us. 

When we learn through Indigenous perspectives, we have opportunities to see learning, relationships, community, and the land in new ways. We strengthen our understanding of one another and create a school where every student can develop a deeper sense of identity, belonging, respect, and connection. 

Our journey from Heart | To Belong to Mind | To Know reminds us that reconciliation is not a single lesson, event, or school year. It is an ongoing journey. 

We belong. 

We learn. 

We know. 

And together, we continue the work of reconciliation. 

Safe Streets: Keeping Our Community Safe 

Keeping our streets safe is a shared responsibility. As students and families travel to and from school, we encourage everyone to make safe choices and stay alert around traffic. 

For pedestrians and riders: 

• Use safe crossing points. Please do not jaywalk or cross between parked vehicles, especially buses. Cross at a corner, intersection, or designated crossing. 
• Look in all directions before crossing and watch carefully for turning vehicles and traffic that may not see you. 
• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street. 
• Stay focused. Put away phones and avoid headphones while crossing so you can see and hear what is happening around you. 
• Be visible. Wear brighter clothing when possible, particularly during darker mornings and evenings. 
• Travel together. Walking or riding as a group can help everyone stay aware and visible.

Reminder | National Day for TRC & Orange Shirt Day Events 

A reminder that the 5th annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day event will take place at The Confluence Historic Site on Wednesday, September 30 from 9:00–10:30 a.m. 

All CBE staff, students, families, friends and neighbours are welcome to attend this important community gathering and continue learning about Truth and Reconciliation. The event is a collaboration between the City of Calgary, CBE, Calgary Catholic School District, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department and The Confluence. 

A CBE group photo will be taken at the CBE Smudge Tipi at the end of the event. Meet us there!

Terry Fox Run Reminder 

A reminder that Haultain Memorial School will be participating in the annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, October 2. 

Students will run/walk to Mallard Point in Fish Creek Park and back. Please ensure your child: 

• Wears comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for running/walking 
• Is dressed appropriately for the weather 
• Brings a Toonie for Terry, if you are able to contribute
