Patrollers Starting Soon

Our HMS School Patrollers will begin their duties in early October! We are proud of these students for stepping up to help keep our school community safe.

This is a great time to review crosswalk safety at home, both at our patrolled crosswalks and others in the community. Please remind children (and model as adults!) to:

  • Stop and look both ways before crossing.
  • Wait for the Patrollers’ signal at patrolled crosswalks.
  • Use the same safe habits at other crosswalks, even when no Patrollers are present.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones or headphones while crossing.

Drivers: Please slow down in school zones, watch for students at all crossings, and be prepared to stop, even at crosswalks without Patrollers. Your attention helps keep everyone safe. Thank you for helping keep our students safe on their way to and from school.

Orange Shirt Day

We will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day on Friday, September 26, this year, as September 30 falls on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a holiday. Orange Shirt Day provides an opportunity to honor the survivors of residential schools and reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities. As part of this recognition, students will engage in age-appropriate learning activities that align with the Alberta Curriculum, and these lessons will be part of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation and awareness moving forward. We encourage all students and staff to wear orange on September 26 to show support and solidarity in this important journey.

Honouring Orange Shirt Day Together – Community Opportunities

As part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, there are meaningful events happening in Calgary on Monday, September 30 that families may wish to attend or explore to deepen their learning and reflection.

  • City of Calgary Orange Shirt Day Ceremony
The Confluence, 750 9 Ave SE
    9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
A city-led ceremony to honour residential school survivors and those who never made it home.
  • Orange Shirt Day at The Confluence
The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland
    10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Free admission and a full day of programming, including tipi lodges representing Treaty 7 Nations, walking tours, storytelling, Métis interpreters at Calgary’s oldest house, and a letter-writing activity supporting reconciliation efforts.

These are wonderful opportunities for families to get involved, reflect, and learn together.

Family Reflection Questions:
You might use these prompts to guide conversation after attending:

  • What was something new you learned today?
  • How do events like this help us remember and honour children who attended residential schools?
  • What is one way we can make sure everyone feels like they belong at school and in our community?

Wearing orange is encouraged if you attend, as a visible way to honour survivors and show that every child matters.

Free Afterschool Program – Queensland Kids

The City of Calgary is offering a Free Children's Afterschool Program again for students in grade 2-6. They run the program at teh Queensland Community Centre on Tuesday and Thursdays, starting September 23, 2025, through May 14, 2026. Registration forms are available in the main office.

New Round of School Clubs

We are pleased to share that whole school clubs are back. In October, students will once again have the opportunity to participate in engaging, 45-minute curricular-connected club sessions during school hours. This round, all students from Grade 1 to Grade 6 will explore a variety of activities, including fitness, creating comics, trivia, board games & mini games, riddles/puzzles and Lego, and more.

During club time, students will be reassigned to teachers based on their chosen interest. This school-wide initiative is designed to foster connections, strengthen relationships, and enhance our students’ sense of belonging.

To show school spirit on club days, students are encouraged to wear their HMS t-shirt or any blue shirt. We look forward to another meaningful round of learning and exploration.
