Principal Update

I am happy to report that the first few days with students were a great success. The vibes in the building were overwhelmingly positive as students settled into their routines, catching up with their old friends and making new ones. We have been lucky to welcome some new staff and you can see the full staff list on our website.

In our early days teachers have been establishing routines with students and we have noticed that many of our older students especially have been demonstrating positive leadership by showing kindness and patience to our littlest learners in the younger grades. We are incredibly proud of the compassion and empathy our students show one another. As a system we are committed to fostering a safe and caring environment where students thrive. Some of the ways our staff are planning to continue our work in this area include:

  • Common teaching using The Zones of Regulation
  • School-wide cross graded clubs
  • Using the CBE’s Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework to guide our structures and supports for all students
  • Implementing AHS’s Mental Health Literacy
  • Whole School initiatives including an upcoming drumming residency, swimming and more!

As we continue the school year, we will share more about the ways we work collaboratively as an HMS family to ensure success for all students who attend our amazing school. Thank you for your continued support and intentionality around building positive relationships with the staff here. We feel very supported by our parent/guardian community and encourage an open-door policy and shared responsibility for caring for our students.

Sincerely,
Melanie Young
Principal

Lunchroom

All students may stay at school over the lunch break to eat their lunch and have an active living break. Once the system has been updated, you will be able to register and pay for the lunchroom program via your MyCBE Account.

Please note, we are operating under the assumption that all students will be staying for lunch. If your child will be going home for lunch, please let the school know so we do not include them on our lunchroom attendance lists.

Ice Cream Social | Open House

Our amazing school council is hosting an informal get-together on Thursday, September 7 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM. This open-house event in meant as a meet-and-greet, or mix-and-mingle type of gathering. Teachers will be in attendance, so families have a chance to meet their child(ren)’s teacher(s) in a relaxed setting. School Council will have ice cream treats and popsicles available for the young and young at heart. We will be gathering outside the school in the back (south side) tarmac area. We hope to see you all then.

Patrols

School Patrols will be on duty at the main crosswalk in front of our school (Queensland Drive & Queensland Circle), starting Wednesday, September 6. The schedule for the first few weeks will include grade 6 students who were on the Patrol Team last year. Next week, notices will go home with grade 5 and 6 students interested in signing up for this leadership role at our school. Training new patrols will begin soon, and we ask that you are patient as they learn the skills and procedures necessary to keep your kids safe on their way to and from school.

School Council/Parent Association | Annual General Meeting

Our upcoming HMS School Council will once again be in-person. Please join us in the Learning Commons on Monday, September 18 at 6:30. This AGM is an important meeting as we will be electing the School Council Executive. If you are a parent of a Haultain Memorial student, you are welcome and encouraged to join us for this important meeting. Immediately following the Parent Council Meeting, you can be a part of helping to plan how to raise and allocate funds for items such as a new playground, school enhancement and family events at the Parent Association Meeting

You can find more information and a link to the meeting (if you choose to join online) on the School Council page of our website.

You can keep up to date by following the Parents of Haultain | Facebook Page.

Kindergarten Kiss ‘n Cry

Tuesday, September 5 is the first regular day for kindergarten students. All students will come from 8:20 – 11:08 AM. We know that handing your precious little ones over to the care of their teacher can be emotional for some kindergarten parents. We also know that for those who are new to the school it is nice to meet the parents of their children’s classmates. Our wonderful School Council will be hosting a Kiss ‘n Cry gathering outside at the main entrance, on Tuesday, September 5 right after the bell.

We hope you will join us after kissing your kindergarteners good-bye, to socialize, possibly meet some new people, and maybe even learn a little about School Council.

Save the Date - School Conferences

School Conferences will be held the week of September 18-22. You will notice an adjustment in the schedule this year. Conference times will be scheduled for afterschool on Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 4:45 as opposed to one longer session on Thursday evening. Friday morning will also have times available for booking.

These conversations are intended to be an opportunity to set some early learning goals and for us to understand how we can best support your child in their learning.

We strongly encourage parents to include their children as part of the conference. This allows students to have a voice in their learning goals and to take personal responsibility for their learning.

Online registration for meeting times can be found through your MyCBE account This system opens up at 7:00 AM on Wednesday, September 13. Once signed in, click on “myCBE” then click on “my School Conferences.”

Student Code of Conduct

Families are asked to read through the CBE’s Student Code of Conduct. This document outlines guiding principles and responsibilities as to what is expected from students and parents with respect to the school.  Our teachers have been reviewing the concepts contained within this document with our students this week, using developmentally appropriate language an examples.

Severe Allergies

A number of students at our school have severe and, in some cases, life-threatening allergies to various nuts and nut products. Out of respect for these students and their families and in the interest of allowing all students to be safe at school we are asking that you do not pack lunches or snacks that contain these products.

Student Drop-off / Pick-up

We kindly ask that parents do not do drop-off or pick-up in the staff parking lot. Likewise, we ask that you do not walk across the staff parking lot with your child as this is a significant safety hazard. Please know that we have staff arriving and leaving the parking lot during entrance and dismissal times (8:20 and 3:07).

Dogs

We have seen lots of your furry friends on our school grounds this week. While you love your dog and we love your dog, they should not be on school grounds according to City of Calgary Bylaws. If you have a concern in this area, please contact 311.
