Haultain Memorial TRC Commitment to Action 2024
To further acknowledge and support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, today, National Indigenous Peoples Day, all CBE schools will share their renewed TRC Commitment to Action with their school community. As a staff, we will be taking up this work in the 2024-25 school year.
This commitment continues our through line of honouring Land as Teacher as we make more intentional curricular connections with Indigenous ways of knowing. We look forward to continuing this important work with students, staff and all community members.
In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day,
and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan,
Haultain Memorial School
acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following commitment to action for the 2024-2025 school year:
Students and staff will commit to exploring, documenting and making explicit connections between the new curriculum and Indigenous perspectives in a way that acknowledges the land as a source and site of learning.
In making our commitment, Call to Action #62 offered inspiration.
Date: June 21, 2024
Library Books Due
All library books are now due back at school. Overdue notices have been sent home with students, so please check backpacks to see if your child has any outstanding books. Thank you for supporting Mrs. McLean in her year-end organizing of our books.
Active Living Day | June 26
On June 26, students will be participating in our Olympic-themed Active Living Sports Day at school. This event will be hosted by teachers and volunteers and will be held outside in the schoolyard. Students will come together for a day of exciting activities inspired by the Olympic Games. This special event aims to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and a healthy, active lifestyle among our students. Our young athletes will participate in a range of fun and challenging events, including relay races, target shooting (nerf), mini hurdles, and tug-of-war. These activities are designed not only to encourage physical activity but also to teach important values such as perseverance, fair play, and the joy of friendly competition.
Please ensure your child is prepared for being outdoors. Students should be dressed for the weather, have a hat and a water bottle and be wearing sunscreen and insect repellant (teachers are unable to apply this at school so please ensure this is applied before your child comes to school).
Community Partner Thank You | Deer Run COOP | Bonavista Safeway | Deer Run No Frills
We are very lucky to be supported by several community partners. Their support is very much appreciated and helps to make our events more special.
Big thanks to Deer Run COOP for donating bananas and granola bars for our Grade 6 Provincial Assessments. Students were very appreciative to have this extra boost prior to writing the PATs on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thank you to Bonavista Safeway for donating cupcakes for our Grade 6 Moving on Celebration. The students loved them, and it was a special added touch that made the event even more memorable.
Thanks also goes out to Deer Run No Frills for donating popsicles for our upcoming Active Living Day. Our students will no doubt find them refreshing after their day of physical activity.
Reminder | School Spirit Days | Student Leadership Team
The Student Leadership Team is excited to announce a few weeks of creativity and camaraderie here at HMS! Get ready to showcase your unique style and spirit as we celebrate a series of themed days. Mark your calendars because each day promises to be more exciting than the last! There are two more Spirit Days ahead.
- Backwards Day – Monday, June 24: Step into the whimsical world of Backwards Day! Wear your clothes inside out or backward, walk backward in the halls, and even speak in reverse (if you dare!). It's a day where everything is topsy-turvy, and the fun never stops!
- Hawaiian Beach Day - Wednesday, June 26: Escape to a tropical paradise without leaving school! Grab your board shorts, leis, Hawaiian shirts, and sunglasses as we transform HMS into a beach oasis. It’s also Active Living Day so get ready to soak up the sun and surf vibes.
Remember, participation is voluntary but highly encouraged. Let's make the last few weeks of school memorable by embracing the themes, spreading positivity, and celebrating our diverse community. We can't wait to see everyone's enthusiasm and creativity on display during our themed days. From your HMS Student Leaders

Urgent | New Playground Build |August 2024 | Volunteers Needed
Thank you for all the support and work that has gone into fundraising for our new playground since 2019. You may have noticed our beloved playground has had some amputations recently and all the hard work you have put to fundraising means we are building a new Playground August 13 to 16, 2024.
Now let’s Build!
Volunteers do not need any specific training to assist. However, they have to be 18 years of age or older, need to wear closed toe & heel footwear, enthusiasm & ability to walk, bend, kneel or squat as needed. Not every volunteer will need to hold or carry heavy items or use equipment – but these are certainly abilities we will use. We have multiple tasks to be done and can use all the help we can get, for any amount of time, to contribute to complete this project.
We are looking for 40 volunteers throughout each day, from 8AM to 5PM. Please sign up on our Volunteer Sign Up via Signup Genius: https://bit.ly/HaultainMS
Ask your neighbors, friends and relatives if they have some time they can spare. Corporate GiveBack: Some companies support this type of volunteer work as a team building day. Let us know if we can help you organize your colleagues to join us for a day.
We’re also still accepting donations to tie up all the final loose ends:
https://www.parksfdn.com/school-led-projects (choose Haultain Memorial School and get a tax receipt).
Please Note the old playground will be coming down on Monday July 29th.
