School Council/Parent Association Meetings | February 12, 2024
Our next HMS School Council Meeting is approaching. Please join us in the Learning Commons on Monday, February 12 at 6:30. If you are a parent/guardian of a Haultain Memorial student, you are welcome and encouraged to join us. Immediately following the School Council Meeting, you can be a part of helping to plan how to raise and allocate funds for items such as a new playground, school enhancement and family events, at the Parent Association Meeting
You can find more information and a link to the meeting (if you choose to join online) on the School Council page of our website. You can keep up to date by following the Parents of Haultain | Facebook Page.
Invite | Family Literacy Night
Mark your calendars for our upcoming Family Literacy Night. In this one-hour session, caregivers will learn about the Science of Reading and come away with some practical tips and tools to support their children in building their literacy skills. The event will start with adults in the gym for a 30-minute presentation, while students are in classrooms playing literacy games. For the last half of the evening, caregivers will join their children to learn and play a game that they can play at home. We hope you will join us for this event. If you plan on attending, please click this link to RSVP so we can plan accordingly (chairs, supplies, etc.).
Who – All HMS Families, we will talk about strategies for ALL grade levels, K-6
What – A 30-minute presentation for adults, followed by family literacy game time
When – Thursday, February 29, 2024, 6:00 – 7:00 PM
Where – In the gym and in students’ classrooms
Why – To give families strategies and tools to support their child’s literacy development
Jump Rope for Heart
February is Heart Month and our school is participating in Jump Rope for Heart. Students will discover fun ways to get active, practice healthy habits and learn how skipping can provide a quick, effective fitness workout. During today’s kickoff assembly our “Student Jump Team” showcased a variety of skipping skills and inspired us to get jumping!
Skipping activities will take place during our Physical Education classes in February. We will hold our Jump Event Day on Friday, March 1 and we welcome families to come skip with us. (This will take place during your child’s gym time – teachers will share information closer to the date).
Students and families are invited to collect donations for the Heart & Stroke Foundation to help them advance life-saving research and provide education about heart disease and stroke prevention. Our Jump Rope for Heart fundraising campaign will be open from February 9 until March 1, 2024. We have a school goal of raising $500. See the information below or the attached letter for information on how to participate.

Fair Entry - Subsidy Application Process
Fair Entry is an application process for subsidized City of Calgary programs and services. This process will assess your income eligibility for multiple City programs with a single application. Just recently, High-Speed Low-Cost Internet and other telecom services have been added to the list of services available through Fair Entry Calgary.
A Calgary MyID account is required to access these services and can be created HERE .
Big 5 for Mental Health
“With the popularity of the wellness industry, we are likely to encounter many programs, apps and supplements promising to improve our mental wellbeing. Unfortunately, many of these products are not only costly, but also have very little (if any) evidence to support their claims. Research continues to point towards a handful of basic lifestyle factors that help build strong physical and mental health. We like to call these The Big 5 for Mental Health. ‘The Big 5’ include Restorative Sleep, Physical Activity, Healthy Eating, Social Connection and Helping Out” (mentalhealthliteracy.org).
Check out the The Big 5 for Mental Health page on the Mental Health Literacy website to learn more.
The first of the Big 5, is Restorative Sleep. Take a minute to note the recommended sleep guidelines for children. You may be surprised how much sleep your child really needs!
